Rarely have I seen a more pleasing open concept floor plan than this one. The relatively large size of the space provides a separation of the areas, which is missing in so many open concept designs. The entry leads to a large kitchen/breakfast room with a walk-out to the south facing deck and Lake Ontario. To the right is a dining room, the most formal of the spaces, (if formal is a word that can be applied to this home at all.) Beyond the kitchen is the service area which provides access from the two-car garage, a two-piece washroom, laundry/utility room, plus a walk-in pantry. At the opposite end is a spacious family room. Where this area meets the kitchen area, there are three steps which lead down into the highlight of the house - a 30' diameter great room, with a spectacular vaulted cedar ceiling and a central woodburning fireplace, accessed from two sides. This room, of course, overlooks Lake Ontario and has two walk-outs to the wrap around deck and beautiful in-ground swimming pool.
Upstairs, the house is equally interesting. There are four generously sized bedrooms, two of which face the lake and have walk-outs to a small connecting balcony. The master bedroom is one of these two and in addition to a wall of large windows, features a woodburning fireplace. A large walk-in closet and four-piece bathroom complete this master suite. Two of the bedrooms share a connecting three-piece bathroom. The fourth bedroom and another three-piece bathroom complete the second floor.
The basement, while not finished completely is drywalled and ready for completion, although the extra floor space is not likely to be needed.
Recent updates inclue new cedar siding, all new windows and the installation of an in-ground pool and poolhouse. If you have read The In-between World of Vikram Lall, by M.G. Vassanji then you are already familiar with this house. In this novel the character Vikram Lall visits the fictional town of Korrenburg, which is modelled on the town of Cobourg. What's more, the home that Vikram Lall visits in the novel is based on this very house. M.G. Vassanji, the Giller Prize winning author, was once a frequent visitor to this house and used it as the inspiration for the lakefront home in his novel. Refer to page 93 in the book for a description of the round great room.
There is something special about living on the lakefront and when it's combined with the beauty and appeal of Northumberland County, it's a combination that I don't think can be beat.
