Possibly the most spectacular views in all of Northumberland County are found at 8501 McBride Road. This 14 acre property is located just minutes north of Cobourg at Cold Springs, but it seems like a whole other world. A long winding driveway leads through the woods and separates the house from the road. The north portion of the property is wooded with hardwoods, but the south portion of the property is open and the house is perfectly positioned at the edge of the woods to take full advantage to the breath-taking scenery including expansive views of Lake Ontario and beyond!

The house was custom designed and the architect was clearly influenced by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. The evidence is in many of the details. The first thing that strikes you is the long low nature of the house. Coupled with the ochre stucco finish (a FLW favorite), this causes the house to appear to be part of the landscape, just as FLW would have built it; as if the house was a part of the earth and at one with its surroundings. The bedroom wing to the right, with its low pitched hip roof and long horizontal row of narrow windows is especially evocative. The next suggestive thing is the front entry because its location is not readily apparent. FLW typically hid the entrances to his houses; those arriving would have to take several turns as they approached the entry, allowing the house to reveal itself slowly. Not really too many turns here, but the entry is tucked away at an angle to the approach, momentarily concealing its location. Once inside, you notice the low slatted wood ceiling of the entry - another FLW trademark.

Just as FLW would have done, this architect employed all these features to "set you up" to be awed by what lies just beyond. As you turn and enter the living room the contrast is striking and almost breathtaking. Now you are in a space with a soaring beamed ceiling and an expanse of glass and it seems at though you can see forever. The space is warm and light filled.

Every single room in the house enjoys the benefits of the extraordinary view and the view from the lower garden level is no less spectacular than those on the the main level. The main corridor, by contrast, runs along the north wall of the house. Its long narrow window placed high in the wall is both practical and aesthetically correct.

The living room and great room are anchored by a massive stone fireplace.

The main portion of the house has 4 bedrooms - two on the upper level and 2 on the lower level. (One of the lower level bedrooms is currently being used as an exercise room.)

In addition there is a completely separate guest wing at the opposite end of the house from the main bedroom wing. Here you will find 4 bedrooms - 2 on the upper level, sharing a 5 piece bathroom and 2 on the lower level, sharing another 5 piece bathroom. The guest wing is accessed through a mudroom off the kitchen, or can be accessed directly through a separate entrance. The options for this space are almost unlimited. It could either be left as is to accommodate a large family or it could be used strictly as guest quarters. Other options might include use as a "granny flat" for extended family, facilities for a B&B or even for home offices.

The great room opens to a heated in-ground pool and patio with wrought iron fencing. The pool is also accessed from the kitchen by way of a cedar deck and stone steps. The pool area is beautifully tucked in close to the house affording privacy and not interfering with the unspoilt vista. While much of the propety is wooded, there are several acres of open land and there is a large barn offering plenty of storage or would be suitable for horses - it currently has 2 stalls.

Properties like this one are rarely available. If you're looking for an outstanding country property be sure to see this one. Please contact me to arrange your viewing of this fine home. davidlester@sympatico.ca
